Livingston, California is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area and across from Richmond, California. The name Livingston comes from an early Spanish settler, José de la Hoz. The first post office was established in 1856 and the first store opened in 1861. In 1916, Livingston incorporated as a village under the name of Hercules Heights. They founded Kaiser Permanente Northern California in 1987 before moving to Oakland two years later to open what is now River Oaks Hospital there. Livingston is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. Livingston is located on the east bank of the Sacramento River and borders Belmont to the north and east; Auburn to the south and west; and Dixon to the northwest. Livingston was founded by American Fur Company employees Wm. H. Dixon and James Fenton in 1853 as a small town on Rancho Centinela (now part of Menlo Park). It became a cattle ranching center during the Gold Rush years because of its location on two major water routes for travelers between Sacramento and Stockton. A mill built in 1861 helped produce flour for local markets. In 1872, Livingston voters passed a $10 per acre gold donation rate for settlement within city limits, which led to its growth as an agricultural center with cotton plantations, orchards, sheep ranches, and other commercial enterprises. The first post office opened in 1865; it later changed its name to Livingston after General Edmund Cady Stanton (1815-1885), one of America's leading advocates of Westward Expansion at that time. The first store opened in 1868 by Jno. Fenton & Son under license from Gault Millowners' Association This store continued until 1899 when it burned down due to fire hazards caused by lightning strikes while operating out of a barn near present day First Street and Amherst Avenue

It became an agricultural center with rich soil and abundant water resources. A railroad arrived in Livingston in 1887 and the town quickly grew into a thriving commercial center.
