In 1868, two brothers named Augustus and George Binoculars founded the binocular business in Livingston, California. The Binocular Store was a small storefront on First Street in downtown Livingston. By 1870, Augustus and George had built a larger building on Main Street. In 1875, the Binocular store became part of the American Optical Company and continued to be run by their sons, Augustus and George Jr. In 1899, American Optical merged with The Wessner company to form The American Optical Company/Wessner Trading Corporation. This company was merged into Corning Incorporated in 1916. After World War I ended, production at the Livingston plant stopped due to lack of demand. However, this did not stop the Binocular Store from continuing to sell binoculars until it closed in 1925. Today there is only one remaining example of the original Binocular store building - it is now used as a museum for local history and culture in Livingston, California

Livingston is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 27,583 at the 2010 census. It is the 9th most populous city in Northern California and the most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was founded on December 17, 1849 by Captain George P. Livingston and his party of six men as a small settlement on Rancho Rinconada within present-day Richmond Heights. The first post office was established at Livingston on March 15, 1850. The town grew rapidly from its original foundation until it reached its peak population of 1003 in 1860 with an area of . When the railroad arrived in 1866, Livingston became part of the new El Sobrante station as it crossed through Contra Costa County from Martinez to San Francisco. By 1870, however, growth had slowed due to limited transportation options and competition from other nearby cities such as Emeryville and Walnut Creek. In 1876–77, another attempt was made to annex what is now Concord but this time without success; local opposition led to annexation becoming an issue again two years later when Sleepy Hollow Railroad proposed building a line through town north to connect with BART at Hayward Station. The incorporation of Livingston took place on November 6, 1879 after months of discussion among various citizens groups including a meeting held at Oneonta Hall which attracted over 100 people Livingston experienced rapid growth during World War II with an influx of military personnel who built Fort MacArthur (now known as Point Reyes National Seashore) and other associated facilities within the town limits. However even during war times there were limitations to development due to lack of housing stock or commercialism that would have supported full-time civilian residents In recent decades Livingston has seen continuing growth due largely to its location within easy commuting distance for both work and personal services including near-constant technological advances being brought into daily life by Silicon Valley businesses like Google and Facebook
Livingston was incorporated as a city in 1884 and became a state town in 1911. It lost its status as a city in 1958 and has had only limited significance ever since.
