Livingston, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California, about an hour and a half drive from Los Angeles. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Rosamond Unified School District. The first European to explore Livingston was Juan Bautista de Anza on September 29, 1769. He named it after Mount Diablo in Contra Costa County, California. In 1874, Elisha Gray built a cabin here that became known as Gray's Trading Post. The post served as an important stop on the stagecoach route between Sacramento and San Francisco during the Gold Rush era. A post office called Livingston was established in 1875, and remained in operation until 1906. Livingston was platted by Jens Jensen in 1881 when he bought land near present day Rosamond for $2 per acre. The town grew rapidly with its numerous shops and businesses serving the agricultural community around it until World War II when defense spending placed heavy restrictions on civilian growth east of Pasadena Boulevard. It wasn't until 1978 that new development began to occur west of Rosamond Road including the now well-known Chevron refinery which has helped create current day infrastructure in this area without prior investment or planning

Livingston, California is a town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,581 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and12 miles (19 km) south of Bakersfield. The community was founded in 1887 by J.P. Livingston, a cattle rancher and politician from Lompoc. The community name honors General John P. Morgan who had died only two months before Livingston's founding and whose estate lay in the area now known as Livingston. Livingston became an agricultural center due to its many acres of fresh water ponds that supplied irrigation for nearby farmland and towns such as Bakersfield and Middletown. The first store opened in 1898, later becoming the first post office in Kern County. In 1902, one of the most important events in Livingston's history occurred when it became part of the newly created Kern County. That year saw major changes within Kern County with Governor George Hearn creating three new counties - Kern Valley, San Bernardino Mountains and Merced River - which would eventually make up California's largest county by area after 1850.
