In 1853 Humboldt County acquired title to large tracts of land east of Lindsay including much of what is now eastern Kern County. The first white settler in Lindsay was John Sutter who arrived around 1855 after spending many years working for Ulysses S. Grant on his Rancho Los Nietos near Sacramento. In 1857 he built a cabin which still stands today within present day boundaries of Lindsay; it became known as "Sutter’s Fort". At this time there were no roads or railroads so settlers had to travel miles westward to get goods and services. Three years later pioneer Fannie Venable arrived from Auburn, New York with her family and set up a post office at what is now called "Fannie's Fort." She named her new settlement after her daughter Fanny (later Mrs.)venable which indicates that she considered it hers alone until Comstock decided it should be part of the larger community established by him at nearby Eureka Springs in 1859 In 1865 comstock granted credit money ($5) to each settler for equipment needed for farming purposes and started construction on Town Hall which became our current courthouse building located just outside downtown Lindsay today . Over time more buildings were erected such as Schools & churches also businesses cropped up along with some very impressive homes like Lady Bird Johnson's childhood home where she lived until her death in 1986 Today we continue living our traditional live life style here!
