The Lindsay post office operated from 1881 to 1915. The first settler in Lindsay was Elisha Kittrell, who erected a cabin on Rancho del Rio de la Faja in 1881. A small town began to form around Kittrell's cabin with people coming to trade goods and services. In 1886, John Hargrave founded Hargrave & Company which served as a general store and bank; it was one of the few businesses that survived through the Panic of 1893. In 1902, George Manson bought land at what is now Lindsay from Kittrell for $5 per acre; he named it “Manson Land” after his father-in-law who had donated the land to him. Over time, other settlers arrived including Harry Hanks (1904), Jerome Lewis (1910), Charles Neely (1912), Harry Middleton (1920), Floyd Sibley (1922) and Emmett O'Brien (1926). In 1928, Township President Jack Laughlin organized a water supply committee which resulted in construction of the first pipeline from Kern Valley to Lindsay proper. The Northern Pacific Railway built tracks through Lindsay in 1935 for its El Centro line which led directly into downtown Los Angeles; this railroad connection made Lindsay one of the most important towns along the Southern Pacific Railroad corridor. Lindsay experienced rapid growth during World War II when many residents moved into government jobs in Los Angeles or went into military service; by 1945, Lindsey had increased its population by over 100%. After World War II ended there was a significant decline in business activity due to inflationary pressures but Lindsays infrastructure remained largely unchanged until recently when advances in technology have caused some changes such as broadband access and more housing developments being built near Interstate 5 Exit 107A/B known locally as "the I-5 draw".

The first post office opened in Lindsay on December 4, 1871, and the name was changed to Lindsay on February 14, 1872. In 1880, it became part of Bakersfield County and then Kern County. On January 3, 1907 it merged with neighboring town Moberly to form the new city of Lindsay. Lindsay has experienced many changes over its history including multiple fires that destroyed most of the buildings in 1916 (the worst fire in Lindsay's history), World War II when battle tanks were used against Japanese forces and Stewart Air Force Base which operated from 1941 until 1946 during World War II; as well as numerous other events that have impacted its residents and economy.
