In the early 1800s, Lindsay was a small agricultural town in the Kern County area of California. The town was founded by Captain John A. Lindsay and his wife, Mary, on May 25, 1848. The Lindseys were pioneers in what would become the firearms industry in California. They started out trading goods with other farmers and ranchers and soon began to make their own pistols and rifles. By the late 1800s, they had built up a large inventory of firearms that they sold at local gun shows and elsewhere throughout California. In 1901, Captain John A. Lindsay donated land to build the first handguns factory in America within walking distance of his home town of Lindsay. This factory produced 1911 pistols for American police forces around the world. It remains one of America's most notable handgun manufacturers today. In 1922, Captain John A. Lindsay donated another piece of property to build an ammunition plant adjacent to his home town which became known as "TheLindsay Arsenal". The early town was named after Captain James McGee of the USS Missouri who discovered gold near Lindsay in 1848. Lindsay grew rapidly and by 1860 had a population of 350 people. It was during this time that the first school was built and the first store opened. In 1863, work began on the first bridge over the San Joaquin River which connected Lindsay with Sacramento. The town continued to grow and by 1870 it had a population of 2,500 people. In 1874, Lindsay passed through a congressional act which granted it cityhood. The city enjoyed rapid growth and by 1890 it had an estimated population of 4,000 people. By this time, Lindsay also fielded a football team which played against local teams from nearby towns such as San Francisco and Oakland
Lindsay, California (formerly known as Lindsay, Oregon) is a town in Shasta County, California, United States. The population was 2,996 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east side of the Sacramento River and is part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Valley metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Lindsay was James Fenton who arrived in 1847. A post office called Lindsay was founded in 1854 by T.J. Haggerty and named for Fenton's brother-in-law John Lindsay. The first store in town was built on Main Street by Wm. Jenssen and opened March 15, 1858. The first school in town was built on Second Street by Cephus Baldwin and opened May 1, 1860. In 1861, a group of businessmen from Stockton formed the Lindsey Navigation Company to build a canal overland from Stockton to Redding through what is now Lindsay but at that time it only extended about one mile due to flooding during winter rains which had been occurring annually since 1850s according to local historian Loren Larson: "the canals were never completed because of opposition from farmers who saw them as an important development that would increase traffic on their land." 1
