Lindsay was named for Captain James Lindsay who explored and surveyed the area in 1849. The name comes from two Spanish words: "Linde" meaning "a low mountain range" and "californios" meaning "us." The first settlers to Lindsay were Englishman John Caird and his wife Sarah who arrived in 1851. They built a log cabin on the east side of Mount Whitney which they called Calico Cabin. A few years later they acquired land to the west and started ranches that included Rancho Los Alamos, Rancho San Miguel, Rancho El Capitan, and Rancho Mono Grove. The first post office was established in Lindsay in 1857. In 1865, George Hearn founded an gold mine near present-day Hearst Castle while he was working as a prospector on adjoining property owned by Mormon Church leader Brigham Young.Young gave Hearn carte blanche to operate his mine as long as he did not find any gold but soon discovered large amounts of gold being Jawbone lodes off the north end of Mt Whitney about 8 miles northeast of where Lindsay now stands. In 1870 Young sold all his mining rights to Hearn for $2 million US dollars which led to the founding of what is now known as Hispanic Miners United Grain Growers Association (HMUGA) Incorporated with headquarters at 1610 W Sunset Blvd., Suite 502 Beverly Hills CA 90022 – one of only six international organizations affiliated with World Gold Council (WGC). From this modest beginning HMUGA grew into one of North America's leading grain growers with more than $100 million worth grown under its banner during its ninety year history! Hearn continued running his mine until it closed down in 1907 due to increased competition from other miners; however, some workings still remain today including those at Anaconda Copper Company's Anaconda Mine #4 which open up every day during summertime!
