Fremont on July 20, 1849 as a post office called Gold Hill. On December 11, 1850, it became a town when the US Post Office Act gave its name to one of America's first towns. The current name comes from George Hearst's holdings in Lindsay Ranch which included land that originally served as part of Fremont's gold mining claim. The city began to grow rapidly during the early 1900s when many farmers moved into the area and began to produce crops such as cotton and hay for local markets. Manufacturing also started to take off during this time with firms such as Dodge Brothers Manufacturing Company making items such as radios and automobiles. By 1924, Lindsay had become home to over 30 businesses and had an estimated population of over 200 people. During World War II, Lindsay played an important role in providing munitions for the war effort due to its location close to major munitions plants including Kaiser Aluminum Works and Ford Arsenal. In 1945, after years of planning by Mayor Harry Heineman Jr., Lindsay became home to its first municipal water system which helped improve public hygiene in the city while also providing essential services like drinking water for residents and firefighting throughout the year. During his eight years as mayor, Heineman made significant progress towards creating a more open-minded society in Lindsay while also building up infrastructure like new roads and bridges within the city limits that increased safety for both citizens and businesses alike. In particular, he worked tirelessly towards increasing access to mental health services which were then scarce within Lindsays' rural environment; this work eventually led to positive changes within the community overall thanks in part to initiatives like Heineman's "Mayor's Plan" which targetedchampioned bilingual education within local schools while also investing in street lights and other infrastructure improvements across townspeople throughout every ward). Lindsay, California was founded in 1859 by James A. Lindsay and his wife Elizabeth Bemis. The Lindsay Adobe later became a part of the Rancho San Francisco Mexican land grant given to José Maria Alvarado in 1847. In 1872, the name changed to Lindsay after David Lindsay, who had purchased part of the grant from Jose Maria Alvarado.
