The history of Lindsay begins with its founding by George Lindsay in 1868. He arrived in what is now northern Butte County looking for land to purchase from Mexican settlers who had acquired it during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1868 he formed a partnership with Wm Hodge and James Ahern (the two were later joined by John Fitch) to buy 6 acres of land east ofpresentday downtown Lindsay from Elisha Peckhams. The 4AD homesteading era began here with surveyors coming out each day to record everything they saw on their trip around what is now northeast corner lot #2 which still stands today just off U.S.-Hwy 395 southeast of town limits
