In 1847, Major Don Carlos Buelna led an expedition into what is now central California looking for land to claimed by Mexico as part of their large Rancho Santa Cruz Land Grant campaign that included many settlements along the lower Sacramento River valley including Folsom & Madera among others In 1848 Captain John Culp returned from his exploration through similar territory nearsin Tehachapi Pass which would later become Kings Canyon National Park On July 2nd 1850 United States General Mariano Weingartner issued Order No 8589 giving all Californians 6 months notice to remove any impediments to public entry into any Territory or State within this Union except those already belonging thereto before January 1st next ensuing or be turned over without such notice to said Indians who then might possess and use said property unmolested . As there were few if any Mexican residents living within these boundaries at this time no orders were given . Many ranchers took advantage of this situation by granting permits to build adobe buildings on their properties so they could remain self-sufficient while still claiming ownership of their land . Ultimately only about 350adobe structures were erected across units covering some 9 square miles By 1860 most Mexicans had either left or been removed from central California due mainly to political events related to Ulysses S Grant’s march upon Mexico City during that year resulting in several hundred thousand Mexican refugees crossing into northern America fleeing US occupation In 1865 General George Armstrong Custer reached Fort Tejon after leading his army through much Of southern California duringlos Angeles Campaign againstMexican forces occupyingThat region resulting in many civilian deaths
