Lincoln also played an important role in American history during World War II when it served as an airfield for fighter aircraft flying into central California for Operation Doolittle which aimed to strategic bomb Japan directly below their capital cities Tokyo and Nagoya instead of through Pearl Harbor which would have resulted in more civilian casualties than military losses; however, only two planes actually made it all the way across country before being grounded by bad weather conditions at nearby airports!
