Lincoln, California was founded in 1851 by the brothers George and Jesse Lincoln. The town was named after Abraham Lincoln, who had been elected president in 1848. In 1865, the town was renamed San Francisco because of the placement of a U.S. flag on top of an old military fortification known as Fort Point. After California became a state in 1850, many settlers came to Los Angeles County to find new land to ranch and build homes. One of these pioneers was James Wirtz, who bought land near the mouth of the San Fernando Valley in 1853 and named his property for President Abraham Lincoln. Wirtz donated four acres (16 ha) of his land to help create what is now Lincolnshire Hills Park District. In 1861, when Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Northern California, Union General Ulysses S. Grant decided to march on Los Angeles instead of retreating back into Sacramento because he knew that if he retreated there would be little chance for reinforcements to arrive in time to stop Ewell from capturing or destroying Los Angeles City Hall and other important landmarks. On November 15th, 1861, General Grant arrived at Ladd’s Station outside of Los Angeles with five thousand men and began marching northward towards Lomita Peninsula where he expected Ewell to be located. However, once they reached Malibu Coast they realized that Ewell had already withdrawn south towards Santa Monica Mountains—a move that allowed Union troops under General John Custer access into central Southern California without being detected or attacked by Confederate forces encampments along the way (see Battle Of The Little Bighorn). On December 3rd 1861General Grant ordered Captain Samuel Gompers commanding Company D United States Infantry Regiment “to take possession”of Spanish Rancho Niguel which lay just east of present-day Pasadena across from what is now Highland Road on what is now Riverside Boulevard; this order constituted an event which foreshadowed later events at Pico Rivera Naval Air Station when Japanese forces destroyed American naval aircraft during World War II (see also Japanese Americans). This order effectively placed control over all remaining Mexican land west of Pasadena within Californian borders east-of-Pasadena within Gompers’ jurisdiction as well as any adjacent properties grants including those belonging to Manuel Nieto aka Rancho Niguel de la Barrera extending northeasterly from present day Clarendon Avenue through present day Arlington Heights Cemetery until its intersection with White Sands Boulevard near Coachella Valley College; although Manuel Nieto never received formal recognition from either side for this gift - it can still be considered one aspect behind Gompers efforts during this period which led ultimately to formation of West Side Urban League - one component associated with white flight from Central LA during 1960s Rampart Street Rebellion period (see also East Side History Museum). Frontiersman Davidson moved his family here permanently about 1840 after finding out about gold around Gilroy Creek near their home range northeast of Stockton Oaks off Olive street according to oral tradition passed down through generations...The first permanent residents were Captains George Davidson and Hiram Sherman who purchased 640 acres northeast corner OF Olive St., between Stockton Rd./Alameda Ave & Center Blvd., section 8 Lots #27 thru 31 Jan 1840 AD
