Lemoore was founded by Father Isidore Topol and Brother José Romero on November 15, 1859, as a small Catholic mission station called San Francisco de los Montes de Lemoore (later renamed San Bernardino). Topol named the town for his home Province of Lombardy in Italy. A post office was established in Lemoore on July 14, 1860, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 12, 1916. In 1872 Topol donated land to the town for a public school and also built a church and other civic buildings. At its peak Lemoore had a population of about 350 people but fell to just over 100 by 1915 due to various factors such as World War I and economic recession. However, since attracted new residents who brought with them their own churches and schools which helped revive the community during those years; today Lemoore has an approximate population of around 150 people again thanks to some recent positive efforts spearheaded by Mayor Donny Keesler The first roads into what is now Lemoore were built by early settlers including Captain John Sutter who discovered gold near current day Echo Lake while exploring Mono County in 1848-49 Heading back east he took his large party through present day Inyo County on January 17th 1850 past Echo Lake then down into Mono Creek valley where he found greatuggets worth $4 per tonne that season bringing him significant wealth which led others to follow suit making mining possible throughout most of California’s Valley The discovery not only increased traffic along already existing routes but also stimulated much speculation leading to further investment culminating with development beginning around Echo Lake forming what is now known as Sutterville With all this exploration came conflict over water rights with Indians who held grazing rights while ranchers claimed water supplies necessary for crops etc., resulting finally in several treaties were signed setting common boundaries between groupsResulting in many families being born here including: dude ranches/cowboys laterStagecoachmen formed out of men working cattle country roundups
