Lemoore is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 12,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield Metropolitan Area. Lemoore was founded by prospectors George and Anna Ladd in 1849, and was named for their brother-in-law General John C. Fremont. Lemoore has a history dating back to 1849 when two men prospected for gold near what is now Lemoore. They were successful and named their new settlement after them: George Ladd's Hill (now downtown Lemoore). A post office was established at Lemoore on September 15, 1850, and served until it was discontinued in 1865. The first settler in town was General John C. Fremont who arrived from retinue with Ulysses S Grant during the Mexican–American War on July 4, 1847 wagon train from San Francisco via Yuma Pass into southern Arizona Territory (). He found gold around Ladd's Hill but returned home before he could become rich enough to start his own mining operation; instead he started a tavern called The Gilded Cage which became one of the most popular watering holes in town.
