In 1919, Lemoore merged with other small towns in Kern County to form what is now known as Bakersfield. Today, Lemoore is an unincorporated community located within Kern County on the edge of Bakersfield. It has a population of about 100 people and consists mostly of retirees from surrounding communities who live on rolling hillsides near lakes and reservoirs. The most notable feature of LemoORE is its natural gas field which has been operated by Anadarko Petroleum Corporation since 1944.
Lemoore was founded in 1852 by speculators George and Luther Lemoore. It became a town in 1854, and was named for General John A. Fremont, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The economy of Loveland was based on agriculture until the early 20th century, when it became an agricultural center for eastern California. The city's first school was built in 1865. In 1922, Loveland established its own waterworks to serve the community; this led to the nickname " Watertown of the West." The city's last cotton gin closed in 1984.
