In Lemoore, California, the history of guns and targets goes back to at least 1911. That year, a group of men from Lemoore City decided to form a shoot club in order to improve their marksmanship skills. The club continued to meet annually until 1932 when it was replaced by the current NRA Pistol and Shotgun Club. The first pistols were brought in by members of the local hardware store and were fired off from behind the counter. From there on out, pistol shooting became an annual event at the old rifle range located just outside of town. The early days of gun Target Shooting were spent practicing with shotguns only because rifles weren't available yet. Rifle shooters would take turns shooting at one another during practice matches until one person became proficient with both weapons. Eventually, handguns began being manufactured which gave rise to competitive pistol events where different teamsshoot against each other using different firearms types (e.g., revolvers). In 1949, a new range was built within walking distance of town and all handgun shooters had to come down for membership meetings so that they could buy their own guns! In 1975, a building was added to the old rifle range which allowed for indoor competition as well as outdoor firing areas for those who wished to shoot in full sunlight or under bright artificial lights! The ARG was replaced by the current system in 1984.
