In early 1861, Lemoore was home to one of the earliest gun sights in California. The sight was installed on a bluff overlooking the town by James P. Henshaw and Company. The Henshaw Sight had three objectives: elevation, windage, and range (or target). It measured 2-1/4 inches in diameter at its widest point and consisted of an oblong mirror with a notch cut out of its center for sighting. The mount included a horizontal iron plate which rotated to move the mirror up or down according to the direction of the wind. The first use of this gun sight likely occurred during the American Civil War when Union forces were attacking Confederate positions in Lemoore. A Union soldier using this sight reportedly hit two Confederate soldiers with his cannonball while they were sleeping. By 1862, however, most gun sights in California were either animal or human subjectsights designed primarily for artillery use only. During World War II, many Lemoore residents helped build military encampments along I-5 outside of town because it was necessary for troops stationed there during the war. One such encampment is known as "Hollywood" because some guns used there still remain today (e.g., .50 caliber machineguns)

Lemoore is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,362 at the 2010 census. Lemoore was founded on February 5, 1887 by J.P. Morgan and other investors from New York City as a dry goods store and post office. The name comes from Spanish lemuel (a messenger). The town of Lemoore rapidly grew due to its natural resources: railroad tracks running through the area made it easy for farmers to sell their crops, and citrus fruit trees became central to the town's economy. In 1907, developer Charles Wurster built the first dam on the Lerma River which impounded water sufficient for irrigation purposes in what would become Lemoore Township. With Wurster's help, industries such as automotive production and shoe manufacturing began to grow in Lemoore during the 1920s and 1930s; however, World War II led to an economic decline that left the city with only 1,500 residents by 1945. During much of this time period Lemoore was known primarily as a stop on Interstate 10 between San Bernardino and Pueblo; however, since Interstate 10 bypassed parts of Kern County in favor of larger highway systems development has gradually transformed Lemoore into one of Northern California's most economically vibrant cities. Today, Lemoore is home to several large corporations including Kaiser Permanente Medical Center and Chevron Corporation; along with numerous small businesses providing local services such as restaurants and retailers
