He named it after his home town in England, Lemondale. The first store opened in 1854 and soon there were two other stores and several houses. In 1861 LEMOORE became an incorporated town when it passed a vote to become one from its section of Fresno County that had been divided between the towns of Moberly and Visalia. In 1871 LEMORE merged with Visalia to form the current city limits. The Mayor appoints four members who serve staggered three year terms; each member serves until he or she retires or becomes incapacitated without cause

Lemoore (formerly known as Lemoore, California) is a city in Sonoma County, California. The population was 23,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first European to encounter and map what would become the City of Lemoore was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769 on his mapping expedition from Baja California under Spanish Governor Manuel de Ayala. In 1821, United States surveyor John C. Frémont named it after General Antonio López de Mendoza y Quadros governor of Alta California during that year's Mexican War for control over parts of northern Mexico which also included parts of today's Sonoma and Marin Counties. Ranchos were platted in this area beginning in 1847 by Northern Californian entrepreneurs such as James Wiltse and Myron Cook who bought land from the Mexican government at or near where present-day Lakeshore Boulevard meets Highway 101. A post office called Lemoore was established at the site on March 15, 1848, by Ulysses S. Grant with territorial mail service; it closed on December 3, 1850 because of increased postage rates due to war efforts against Mexico In 1851–52 American prospectors discovered gold along the Mustard Seed River then strike an ore vein off US 101 near what is now town center; this led to rapid growth with many new buildings being erected around this time including one school (1856), three churches (1857), four stores (1858), two hotels (1860), and three mills (1862). The discovery caused a stampede for water rights leading to a boom in housing development around town center including eight large homes built between 1863 and 1865 by Jno.[3] One result of rapid growth was an increase in taxes which reached $1 million by 1870 but dropped gradually thereafter as new production became available outside town limits In 1861 San Francisco Examiner journalist Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote "I have been living among men since I been seventeen years old – among them some who are my equals – these last seven years...I have not seen anything so beautiful as this [Lemoores' downtown] business district." Hawthorne went on to say "It has no equal anywhere" One early resident noted: "It cannot be said that there are any great plebeians hereabouts...All classes can find comfortable lodgings." However another early resident remembered feeling like a 'backward boy' when he moved into his first home; however within 5 years he had become quite successful rancher / banker . By 1880s most residents were middle class professional men or women associated with various businesses located downtown or beyond its bounds Theville Manufacturing Company became largest employer active within city limits until 1906 when it relocated outside city limits to Petaluma CA
Lemoore was founded by John C. Fremont in 1851 as a small town on the banks of the San Joaquin River. The town grew rapidly and by 1865 it had a population of over 1,100 people. In 1876, the city was named for Lemoore County, California, which had been established that year. The city became an important agricultural center during its early years and developed into a major shipping and trade hub in the region. In 1906, Lemoore was renamed after General George Armstrong Custer for his role in leading Ulysses S. Grant's military campaigns in Indian Territory during the American Civil War.
