The first settler in what is now Lemoore was George C. Smith who arrived in 1887 and named it after his cotton plantation near the Oregon border. In 1912 when Lemoore became part of California, it had a population of only 60 people but quickly grew with ranching and farming becoming parts of its economy. The post office opened in 1914 and continued serving until 1951 when it closed due to lack of mail traffic; however, today there are still several businesses that serve the community including L&D Library which opened in 1922 and is one of the largest open-air public libraries west of Interstate 80. Lemoore also saw some significant events during its history such as World War II when many local citizens participated in helping to fight against Nazi Germany; later on they would go on to become major political supporters of Reaganomics which helped improve their economy greatly during that time period.; plus other important moments include being home to both Sonny Bonno (the boxer) and Hollywood star Roy Scheider before he moved away to become an actor while others like Hallie Jackson (of Jackson 5 fame) were born hereabouts before moving on to greater things.
