Lemon Grove was founded in 1907 by Italian American immigrants. The town was initially named after the lemon tree that grew wild in the area. In 1915, the Lemon Grove Rifle and Pistol Club was founded, and the first target shoots were held. In 1923, the town's first high school opened, and a rifle shooting range was built. The Lemon Grove Rifle & Pistol Club continued to operate until it disbanded in 1976. The club's archives are now located at California State University-Bakersfield. There are also several gun museums located in various parts of California that feature targets from Lemon Grove history.

It is part of the Claremont–Salinas–Montebello Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lemon Grove was named after lemon trees that grew on a ranch there. The first post office in Lemon Grove was established in 1887. Lemon Grove was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 as a small farming community about southeast of present-day Claremont. It began as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Sacramento and Salt Lake City and became one of several towns along the line built by Mormons to escape plural marriage practices under Mexican rule. In 1881, Brigham Young organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in Lemon Grove and renamed it Salt Lake City; however, most Mormons from here continued to live elsewhere throughout much of Utah’s history. In 1886, Mormon missionary George Romney collected settlers near lemon groves east of town for his new church outpost at Waddell ; Romney named this community “Lemon Grove” after his home colony (the now-defunct Gilded Age resort town located within today’s boundaries). By 1890, when LDS missionaries arrived here to proselytize for democracy and land reform among Native Americans living nearby on Mono Creek canyonlands*, only 2 families lived here; most all other residents were converts or transient miners who had followed Brigham Young from Nauvoo Illinois just over two years earlier.* From then until 1909** when Lemongrass Avenue opened up leading into town center through an opening created by floods caused by winter weather* following an especially severe snowstorm that year†—virtually everyone who lived here worked either directly or indirectly with those constructing or developing what would become downtown: more than half the population engaged in some kind of trade or commerce before1900†.* This agricultural boom led to increased production values for local products such as eggs, flour, cheese*, apples* and grapefruits*; moreover† these same businesses generated significant wage income which helped support many family members during difficult times.* However† during World War II** most businesses closed their doors due to rationing† while nearly all jobs went away† leaving Main Street largely unchanged from its prewar days save for a few select shops catering to tourists interested primarily in early 20th century cultural attractions like Mission Dolores Cemetery* which still remains open today as an attraction free ticketed visit
