Lemon Grove was founded on July 12, 1887 by Peter Lemon and his wife Emma Smith Lemon. The name comes from two lemon trees that were planted in the town's central square. The first post office in Lemon Grove was established in 1888, and served a brief period before being moved to its present location. In 1906, the lemon industry began to thrive in Lemon Grove thanks to new technology developed by Dr. John Latham for Canning Company of America (later Pepsi-Cola). In 1928, the community saw its first professional football game when it joined the Kern County League (later Valley Football League) as a member organization. The team played its first ever game against Butte Creek High School on October 10th 1928. The most significant event that took place during the early years of Lemon Grove was when it became known as "The BreadBasket of Kern County" due to its large supply of fresh breadfruit that came from farms around the area. This tradition continued into recent times with much local breadfruit being sold at farmers markets throughout Golden State and beyond including several stops within walking distance of Lemon Grove itself!
