In the early 1800s, Lemon Grove was a small town in California. The town was founded by William Pearce in 1836 and it was named after the lemon tree that grew nearby. The first lemon trees were brought to Lemon Grove from Japan in 1848. By 1870, there were over 50 lemon trees growing in Lemon Grove. In 1898, the Lemon Grove Light Railway opened up and it allowed people to get to Lemon Grove from everywhere east of Sacramento. At first, the passengers got off at the light railway station and walked to the village center where they could buy goods or eat food. However, as time went on, more and more passengers started getting off at the railway station and travelling directly to Lemon Grove. By 1926, all of the passenger trains had stopped running so people had to take public transportation instead which made life much easier for everyone involved. In 1970, a new highway was built through Lemon Grove so traffic stopped being a big issue and now everything is much more pedestrian friendly than it once was!

In 1912, Poston's son Harry bought out his father's interest and continued to operate the plantation until his death in 1928. A few years later, Harry's grandson John C. Poston took over and ran the business until it was sold to Robert Wickersham in 1941. Wickersham renamed it Lemon Grove Orchards Incorporated (LLO) and produced quality fruit for local restaurants and distributors through 1945. In 1969, LLO merged with another local Orchard Company, Golden Gate Orchards Inc., to form Golden Gate Citrus Fruit Co., Ltd., which still produces quality fruit today!

The town of Lemon Grove was platted in 1879 by James Manton and others as part of the San Joaquin Valley agricultural district. It became a small community with only a few hundred residents when it was chosen for its location on the banks of the Sweetwater River. Lemon Grove's namesake tree (Cytisus lemonsinus), located near Main Street and later renamed after Representative George Gallup (R-New York) because he donated money to fund its care, is one of many local landmarks that date back to the early years of Lemon Grove. In 1907, General Electric built a large power plant here which contributed significantly to the growth of Lemon Grove over ensuing decades. However, progressivist values began seeping into Lemon Grove during World War II as industry shifted from agriculture to munitions production and then automation within government agencies. AfterBallistic Intelligence Branch President Harry Truman visited Lemon Grove in 1945 during his Senate investigation into allegations of Communist infiltration within U.S.-owned factories abroad, anti-Communist sentiment ran high in the townspeople and they voted to enter into annexation by Kern County two years later amid fears that their beloved hometown would become an example of communist control over America's most populous county. Today's lemon grove has continued its steady growth since annexation and boasts more than 6800 residents - making it one of Kern County's most populous communities outside city boundaries - Despite this increase in population density there are still pockets throughout much of downtown where narrow streets lead directly to whitewashed housing units dating back to earlier days when families gathered around open fires at night while children played nearby or entertained themselves with homemade games such as checkers or dominos; today these neighborhoods are known simply as "Old Town" or "The Hill".
