Lemon Grove is a small town in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is located in Contra Costa County, on the southern edge of San Francisco Bay Area city of San Jose. The town began as an agricultural community and grew around a post office, store, and school from 1853 to 1885. After being platted in 1885 by John Cranch and his brother-in-law Judge George Fenton (the namesake of Fenton Street), Lemon Grove became part of Berkeley Township in 1911. The population increased rapidly following World War II when many American troops stationed in Northern California returned home and founded families here. Afterward, the economy slumped during the 1990s recession; however, it has bounced back since then with new businesses opening up and population growth. Today, Lemon Grove is known for its reconstructed Adobe Walls which date back to the 1800s; as well as its annual "Holiday Parade" which features floats made out of local materials like logs and boulders.

Lemon Grove was founded in 1871 by Mormon pioneers and has been a part of the Sacramento metropolitan area since it was annexed by the city of Sacramento in 1914. The town is named after lemon trees that grow on the banks of the Feather River. The first land owners in Lemon Grove were Mormon settlers who arrived during the Gold Rush era in 1851. They were followed by Chinese laborers working on an citrus plantation near present-day Citrus Heights. In 1865, Captain John Sutter came through this area and ordered his men to destroy all any peach orchards they found because he thought they would be used to produce wine for Mexican troops fighting against US forces under General Don Carlos Manuel de Alvarado during the Mexican-American War. The first post office opened in Lemon Grove on July 10, 1871. It was called Redding and served residents of what are now Elk Grove Village and Folsom City before being moved to its current location two years later. The first store in Lemon Grove was built on Main Street by Hiram Wilkinson and operated until 1886 when it burned down due to a fire caused by lightning. A new store opened up about a mile away on Second Street which continued to serve customers until 1915 when it also burned down due to arson. In 1914, when Sacramento annexed Lemon Grove, it became part of what is now known as DowntownSacramento as well as parts of El Sobrante, Live Oak Hills, Midtown Eastside, South Park and North Park neighborhoods within downtownSacramento Lemon Grove experienced some growth during World War II with many local businesses contributing products such as munitions production for the war effort .
