Lemon Grove was founded in 1887 by Edward and Emma Lemon as a citrus orchard on the edge of present-day Lemon Grove Village. By 1907, the Lemon Orchards had grown to include 6 acres (2 ha) of trees and 20 acres (8 km2) of land. In 1929, Edward Lemon donated 3 square miles (10 km2) of former Rancho San Joaquin lands for use as a town square; dubbed "The Gated Community" because it contained only white homes until after World War II when black residents moved into surrounding areas. The first post office opened in 1916; it later changed its name to Lemon Grove and eventually became incorporated as a city in 1959. The population reached 10,000 by 1970 but declined to 7,500 by 2000 due to suburbanization and other factors. The economy has been sustained by agriculture since the early 20th century with citrus production continuing until recently; however, there has been recent growth in retail and professional services. Lemon Grove is home to two universities: University of Redlands and Orange Coast College/Mixed Use Center Campus

Lemon Grove is a town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,624 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert and on the edge of Clear Lake. The town was founded in 1875 by John Sutter and Confedrale Benicia Lemon. The first post office in Lemon Grove was established in 1876. The name "Lemon Grove" comes from two sour lemons that were found growing near the original settlement site. Reverend James Fenton purchased 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land near present-day Lemon Grove to build a community around these lemons. A school, church, and other buildings were erected here within months of Fenton's purchase. In 1877, entrepreneur Isaac Asimov opened his lemonade stand on Main Street in what is now known as Asimov's Corner. This area became known for its produce - many farmers sold their goods door-to-door. By 1880, there were over 20 stores selling lemonade in Lemon Grove alone! The popularity of lemonade led to development around it - a grocery store and several residential blocks were built along Main Street between 1883 and 1886 . These blocks remain some of the most popular neighborhoods today within Lemon Grove limits; they are called Hillcrest Heights or simply Hillcrest areas today because so much of their architecture reflects this history: wrought iron fences line streets throughout the oldest blocks while newer Blocks II through XIV have more expensive housing developments with no remnants of historic architecture dating back to before World War II!
