The first people to live in Lemon Grove were the Ohlone Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild plants and berries. They built their villages on hills overlooking the creek that flows through Lemon Grove. In 1846, American soldier Cesar Chavez came to Lemon Grove from Tulare County to teach farming techniques to Ohlone people. He also collected wild lemons for his wife's lemon juice recipe. In 1887, James Ewing established a grove of lemon trees on his property east of town. He called it Ewing Park after his father-in-law, General James Ewing (1811-1885). The grove became world famous and continues to be well known today as the source of most lemons used in baking and other foods items becauseEwing had patented this process in 1888. Lemon Grove was incorporated as a city on December 12, 1911 by voters via an initiative referendum.
