The first lemon trees were grown here in 1878, and early fruitigrants to the area included pioneers John Cohan and his wife Nellie Gee Cohan from Norwich, Connecticut, who arrived in 1879; David Sanford from Dover Township, New Jersey; and Walter Pogue from Bakersfield, California along with their families. Millionaire Earl Warren grew up in nearby Tracy and donated land for the local high school which became ground zero for Silicon Valley's growth story beginning with Hewlett-Packard Company founder Gordon Bell's 1965 donation of $100,000 to help fund its establishment there. In 1978 Mayor LewAllen appointed Lemon Grove its first mayor pro tem because he lacked an office at City Hall at that time. Lemon Grove has been served by Modesto Unified School District since 1968 when it merged with other local districts to form Kern County Unified School District 2
Lemon Grove originally was a small settlement in southern California, located near the San Bernardino Mountains. The first white person to live in Lemon Grove was Manuel Orozco, who arrived in 1851. In 1857, Zenon Ohlendorf established a mill at Lemon Grove, which became one of the largest mills in Southern California. In 1886, the town's first post office was established. By 1893, Lemon Grove had a population of around 100 residents. A year later, the town was renamed Crystal City after the discovery of crystals of glassstone nearby. The Citrus Belt Railroad reached Lemon Grove on November 25, 1912 and began service there on December 1st. On January 1st 1913, Crystal City became an incorporated city with a population of over 200 people and its own police department.On May 15th 1923 by order of Mayor Harry Laughlin new streets were laid out within the city limits as part of an effort to makeCrystalCity more organized than it had ever been before for purposes of providing easy access to all its citizens and their businesses
