In 1912, Lemon and his son Harry bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land just east of town for $10 per acre. They named their new home "Lemon Grove", after their father's birthplace in Wales. In 1923, they added an additional 1,500 acres (600 hectares), which included the current location of Lemon Grove Park. By 1849 citrus had become so important that Captain Comstock ordered all unoccupied land within two miles (3 kilometers) of Los Angeles be put under cultivation – including what are now Lemon Grove and South Pasadena – with disastrous results because wild limes grew where other plants did not! In 1907–08 George Atherton planted 60 cherry satsuma trees on 4 acres (16 square meters) he leased from Mrs./Mrs.. Hildebrandt near San Bernardino Avenue east of present day San Gabriel Boulevard in what is now known as Grapevine Heights; these became world-famous for their sweet flavor but also spread word about this unusual fruit so Atherton’s lease expired in 1909 when he failed to renew it; however Mrs./Mrs.. Hildebrandt continued to grow them until her death in 1925/6 when they sold out to Rufus King who then gave them away as gifts to various people including President Franklin D. Roosevelt…. In 1934 Hollywood film producer David O Selznick purchased 800 acres (240 hectares) around Monrovia Lake northeast of downtown Los Angeles from Mr./Msgr.(?) Hinckley for $2 million dollars… Monrovia became Selznick's production center for pictures such as "Gone With The Wind" and "A Song Of Ice And Fire".
