Lemon Grove is a small town located in Madera County, California. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is home to the Lemon Grove Historical Museum and Library, a National Register of Historic Places listings district, and the Lemon Grove Creamery. The first people to live in what is now Lemon Grove were the Ohlone Indians. After discovery of gold in 1848, many settlers came to this area looking for treasure chests full of gold coins that had been left behind by Mexican immigrants who had come through this region during the Mexican War. In 1852, two men named William Hahn and James Kapp founded a store on Main Street. Hahn ran the store until his death in 1865; Kapp continued running it until his death in 1886. In 1862, John Cranch settled here with his family from San Francisco. He started an agricultural business which he operated until 1876 when he sold it to Simeon Jernigan who moved it to Redding and then back to Madera County where he developed it into one of the most successful vineyards in California. Jernigan's wine became so popular that he decided to open a winery here in 1877 which became famous for its Zinfandel wines (now owned by Chateau Montrachet). In 1905, Jernigan's son-in-law Harry Sparks opened a grocery store next door on Main Street which became known as Sparks' last stand before selling out to Safeway in 1978. The post office at Lemon Grove was established on December 12, 1880 (the date shown on oldest U.S.) mapor Frank Ayerstaller and George Wertheimer both mail carriers for Northern Pacific Railroad arriving at Stockton about November 30th 1880 thence via Fresno & Orange Counties up Bear Valley Road past Happy Valley bottoms searching for posts wagon trains stopped just short of Big Piney Mountains near present day Union Station) . The post office remained open until 1915 when it was closed due To World War I activities there were no more wagons coming down Bear Valley Road so no new packages were delivered! Lemon Grove Creamery opened its doors on October 15th 1928 after being founded by Mrs Alice Kinderman with help from her daughter Betty Kinderman Sellers with $5 thousand provided by Mr Charles Beecham (a local rancher who also donated land). Mrs Alice Kinderman passed away within weeks of opening but her daughter Betty continued operations as an independent business under her name until she sold it 1 year later along with all other assets including lemon groves acres they leased from Beecham’s heirs pursuant conveyance dated September 3rd 1930 making Lemon Grove Incorporated! Today we own over 7000 acres of citrus fruit production averaging 480 trees per acre yielding over 1 million pounds per year exported around the world!
