Lemon and his wife Cornelia Brown Lemon as the townsite of Lemon Valley. The name originates from lemon trees that grew near the settlement. The first store in Lemon Grove opened in 1886 and was operated by Wm Ahern and Bros., which still stands today on Main Street. By 1888, there were five stores in town and it had a population of around 100 people. In 1897, Griggs & Co., an insurance company, built a Store #5 on Main Street which remains today as part of the Griggs family's business empire. From 1898 to 1902, Reverend J H Bunting served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church located on State Route 114 opposite Lemon Grove High School until his death in 1902; he is buried there with his wife Eleanor (née Demarest). In 1916, when Hollywood began filming "The Grapes of Wrath", director John Ford decided to move his production camp from Rodeo Drive to nearby Mather College so that all the actors could be close to food and water supplies while they filmed without having to leave their trailers for extended periods of time. He made use of lemon groves for this purpose as well; one scene where Jeff Bridges' character has to cross a flooded washboard road shows him eating fruit from a tree growing near LEMON GROVE HIGH SCHOOL! In 1948 TV series "The Beverly Hillbillies" filmed scenes at LEMON GROVE HIGH SCHOOL before moving them downriver to Marina del Rey proper for exterior shots during season three episode eleven entitled "A Thousand Miles". In 1957-58 episodes of "Ironside" were filmed at LEMON GROVE HIGH SCHOOL before being moved downriver again for interior shots during season four episodes five through eight entitled "Homesick Heroes". During its heyday as an agricultural center with market gardens, citrus grove, dairy farms, chicken coop and other agriculture activities including hogsheads filled with oranges dropped off by truckload into the orchards each day prior to harvest (the same thing happened now only with fruits), Lemongrass spread throughout much of Orange County due largely to irrigation ditches constructed between 1915-1920 diverted southward along present day I-580 corridor adjacent thereto - Consequently many structures associated specifically or historically with citrus cultivation have long since disappeared leaving behind only vestiges such as two large stands currently standing off Egrace Road just north/west side lot formerly occupied by one such stand displaying originalLVDS power lines running parallel above accessed via ramps leading upslope from east side lot originally used also for storage areas 60 feet wide x 30 feet deep formerly containing over 500 pounds/ft3 high sugarcane straw now mainly composed feed haystack(s) - photo Historical map available upon request One particularly interesting fact about early Lemon Grove residents is that all but three – James Fenton (1846-1924), Flora Hawkins (1892-1974) and Nora Sisson (1896-1983) – are documented within both history books and local archives pertaining thereto: James Fenton born December 6th 1846 in Scotland;Flora Hawkins born October 17th 1893 in Russia; Nora Sisson born January 22nd 1896 in Hungary).
