In 1824, gold was discovered in nearby Siskiyou County and prospectors began arriving in Lawndale to search for it. In 1851, Lawndale became a post station on the Sacramento Northern Railroad and soon developed into a ranching community with homes built around a central square where goods were sold and traded. The settlement changed hands several times during the 19th century before it reached its current form as it grew out of necessity following large land purchases by various ranchers and farmers over time. As law enforcement increased in importance throughout California during the late 1800s, local officials enacted ordinances outlawing polygamy and other forms of sexual misconduct within their jurisdiction; this led to increased rates of violence against women outside marriage in rural areas such as Lawndale. In 1907, when Judge James Ayer decided that two men who had married each other without proper consent should be allowed to have children instead (a ruling which has been cited as one reason for Proposition 8), many people in Lawndale came to believe that same-sex marriage would be legalized soon enough regardless of Ayer's decision because most everyone seemed sure that Judge Harry Smith would eventually rule against any prohibition efforts from local officials if they proceeded further than appeals or litigation. However, Judge Smith ruled against any legalization effort at that point due to concerns over civil liberties implications – while he did agree with legal experts that gay marriages could not be challenged under Californian law because they were considered “marriages” rather than “ unions” between partners defined by gender norms at that time, he felt that doing so would amount to government endorsement of homosexuality instead of just recognizing it as an individual fact).
