Lawndale has been part of the San Bernardino metropolitan area since its incorporation on March 15, 1907. The first post office in Lawndale was established on October 6, 1887. The name came from an incident where two farmers were fighting over a piece of land and one called him "Lawndale" while the other called him "Lawndale". In 1907, Lawndale became an incorporated city with a population of 10,000. One of the early leaders in Lawndale was Mayor J.P. Donnelly who served from 1912 to 1916 and1920-1924. Other notable mayors during this time were Nellie Bly (1924-1929), Harry Hendershot (1929-1934), and Ray Wojtasiewicz (1945-1949). It wasn’t until 1951 that the City Council decided to change their name to “Lawndale” after law enforcement officer Lt. John Dolan who had died in action three years earlier at World War II's end. In 1957, it was announced by then Mayor William Jahn that plans were underway for what would become one of North America's largest shopping complexes - The Mall at LawndALE - which opened its doors on July 1, 1958 when the company that built it purchased it from developer Hines Corporation for $100 milliondollar ().
