During World War II, Lawndale played host to many military installations including Camp Irwin near present day Lynwood; Fort Chaffee on Lankershim Boulevard; and Hollywood Park on Wilshire Boulevard just south of La Brea Avenue. After the war ended, many factories closed down butLawndale continued to grow until its population reached 100,000 by 1970 according to city records With all these changes came new concerns for both city officials and citizens about crime rates and infrastructure developments such as Interstate 5 (I-5) east/west lanes that bypassed much downtown until they were finally opened up in 1990 making it easier for cars to flow through without stopping at red lights or blocksy development close by like Koreatown that had been created since then becoming increasingly dangerous because large numbers people have moved there recently looking for cheaper housing than what exists within LAWNDALE limits

The name Lawndale is derived fromlaville (a Russian word meaning "field"). In 1881, a post office called Lawndale was established, and the name stayed until 1907 when it changed to Lawndale Heights. In 1906, two men named George Haggerty bought land near Lawndale and began developing it into an agricultural center. They named their company Haggerty Farms after themselves. In 1948, they sold the farm property to the United States Department of Agriculture for $10 million dollars. The department used it as a model farm for rural development throughout California. Today, part of the campus of UC Riverside uses portions of Haggerty Farms as well. The area aroundLawndale has been inhabited by Native Americans since before European arrival in what is now California; some estimates say up to 40 different cultures have lived there over time There are numerous petroglyphs or pictographs dating back to 10,000 years ago that can still be seen around this area . According to historian Eileen Fagan , "There's evidence that these people knew about irrigation systems and had descriptions on how plants grew." Indian traders also visited this area during this time . A group known aslos Angeles Missionaries arrived at San Francisco Bay in 1769 and began preaching Christianity among the Ohlone people ; they later built a mission here which became known as Mission Dolores . After Mexican independence was granted in 1848 , Californios started arriving in large numbers ; many Anglo-Saxon immigrants followed soon thereafter One such group was led by Father Miguel Enríquez y Ruiz who arrived with his band of missionaries on July 12 th , 1851 Heading south through Sonora he came upon an abundant water supply but discovered no villages or towns; he therefore decided instead to establish twin missions at Comeconia (now Petaluma) and Rancho Negro (now Modesto) southeast of Sacramento Spanish missionaries also evangelized among various tribes living along the coast including Coast Miwok Indians
