Lawndale is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 7,022 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–Roseville–Temple City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Lawndale" likely comes from Rancho de la Paloma, which was located in what is now Lawndale. Spanish settlers named it San Marcos because of its spring (santuario). In 1879, an act by the state legislature granted to John Sutter and his brother-in-law James Irvine all that lay within their grant of Rancho Anza off of present-day Lawndale Boulevard. This gave rise to the Irvine family's ownership and control over much of eastern Sacramento County. The law giving them this land also became known as the Sutter Act because they were eventually able to sell it for $10 million to a group led by Charles Evans Hughes in 1907. Some early settlers included Edwin Emmons and his wife Martha; they built a small cabin on what is now Fair Oaks Road east of town in 1881. In 1882, they bought another small cabin near present day references #5 and #7 on Commerce Road northwest of town for $1125. They called it "Emmons' Cabin". A year later they acquired an acreage next door at reference #8 for $375 from Cushman & Wakefield lumberyard proprietors Elisha Horton and Augustus Bancroft IV., who had sold some land to Los Angeles cattle ranchers John Purdy and George Wickersham three years earlier. 2) Most people in early Lawndale probably named themselves after places or families close by: Martha Emmons (early settler), Edwin Emmons (later settler), James Irvine (owner/operator/builder/developer of many businesses around here including rancher JOHN PIERDY & GEORGE WICKERSHAM's Lumberyard on Fair Oaks Rd.), etc...

In 1906 Lawndale experienced its first tornado when a large branch of the Santa Clara River overflowed and created a waterlogged area that measured 25 feet wide and 6 feet deep near downtown. In 1924 law enforcement officers from nearby Madera built an elaborate metal detector station at what is now known as "The Machine Shop" on North Sheffield Avenue for use by both Madera and Lawndale law enforcement officers. This station remains operational to this day and is now used as a community center. -in 1932 Mayor Waddell named Lawndale's only high school after then Governor Ronald Reagan - George Washington High School (now George Washington Elementary). During World War II various businesses including Boeing Aircraft made huge contributions to Lawndale through their donations of equipment or parts to local military units active in the war effort such as The Army Air Corps' Ninth Air Force Base located adjacent to the Town across Highway 101 just south of Interstate 5
