Lawndale is an incorporated town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of theLos Angeles metropolitan area. The name comes from a Spanish word meaning "fair ground." The first Europeans to visit Lawndale were Frenchmen in 1769, who named it after La Jolla on the coast of Mexico City. Lawndale was platted in 1853 by Captain John Brougham and his associates as a military post for soldiers stationed along the Santa Ana River. A year later it became known as a center for theatrical performance because of its location just north of Hollywood Boulevard. In 1857, lumber baron Andrew Wiggin acquired title to what is now Lawndale Heights and began developing parcels of land into what are today's neighborhoods including North Park, La Brea Terrace, Mid-Wilshire and Koreatown. In 1893 William Randolph Hearst acquired 8 acres (3 ha) south of Los Angeles Boulevard; this parcel became Hearst Ranch and remains within the current boundaries of Los Angeles today. Included among Hearst's holdings were parts of present-day Los Angeles and Orange Counties; he donated these tracts to Lawndale Township in 1916 as part of his settlement with the Pico Union people over their claim to grazing rights on what are now Hearst Hills Cemetery and portions of lawndale village square today. In 1922 construction began on Hollywood Drive; that same yearlawndavelle station opened onthe Southern Pacific Railroad line between downtown Los Angeles and Van Nuys Airport northwest ofLawndale Village square with service until 1972 when Amtrak took over passenger rail services.. The opening ceremony coincided with Hollywood's centennial celebration which saw many movies being made there including "It Happened One Night" (1934), "Casablanca" (1942), "A Star Is Born" (1935), "Citizen Kane" (1941)and "The Magnificent Seven" (1960). There have been several changes to lawndavelle since then: * In 2002 Mayor Robert Garcia announced plans to demolish most Interstate 5 across town due to budget constraints; this resulted in much protest from residents who felt they had already borne too much expense without any gain in development or quality control over their communities while also facing increased traffic congestion outside their homes
