The history of Lawndale goes back to 1851 when John Henedy and his family founded a post office and ranch near present day Madera. They named their cattle range "Hennepin" after one of their old friends in Illinois. In 1902, they incorporated as a city and changed their name to Lawndale after New York City's law enforcement officer Alberto Rivera Lawndale (1868-1956) who had been killed in the line of duty. He was an Italian American policeman who had served in East Harlem and Brooklyn before becoming a detective with the NYPD's Bronx Bureau in 1918. In 1927 he became head of investigations for Mayor James Maugham of New York City. In 1935, Drury Medical College opened its doors on land that still includes parts of Lawndale today. Today it is one of Northern California's leading medical schools with programs in psychiatry, neurology, surgery, podiatry and geriatrics among other disciplines. The first post office at Lawndale was established on December 12th 1851 by John Hennepin under the name "Hennepinville". On July 14th 1861 it moved from its original location 3 miles east to what is now Maxwell Street between Central Avenue and Maycomb Avenue; this new location allowed for more reliable mail delivery service due to improved transportation conditions during these early days when horses were not common tools for transportation across country! The first school located withinLawndale limits was Charity School which operated from 1865 until 1894 when it merged with nearby Millsaps High School to form Science Hill Academy which remained in operation until 1938 when it merged again with nearby Northwood Academy which became Northwood High School). In 1886 Drury Medical College opened its doors; this started what would become oneof NorthernCalifornia's most prominent medical schools with programs such as psychiatry (later renamed psychiatric specialty), neurology (later renamed neurology), surgery (later renamed surgery), podiatry (later renamed podiatry), geriatrics (later renamed geriatrics) among others! A park called Indian Hills Park was created adjacent to Drury Medical College in 1935 following approval by voters via an initiative campaign spearheaded by thenMayor Harry Seibert Jr.; Indian Hills Park would stay open until 1968 despite changes made to neighboring neighborhoods including displacement of numerous homes resulting from World War II construction projects! In 1941 Officer Alberto Rivera Lawndale donated $5,000 towards development of a community center adjacent to thenNorthwood High School which would eventually be called Riverdale Center; Riverdale Center remains oneof Northern Californians most popular community centers dating back to its inception over 50 years ago! Today there are many businesses located withinLawndales boundaries including KFC headquartersand two major banks: Wells Fargo & Company and First National Bank!!!

As a result of this crime wave, the city lost many of its key citizens and businesses suffered heavy losses. In 1945, Lawndale officially changed its name to San Francisco after becoming part of that city's annexed territory following World War II. Despite these challenges throughout history, Lawndale has continued to grow steadily since becoming an incorporated municipality in 1978. Today it is one of Northern California's most vibrant cities with a thriving economy based on technology services and health care sectors among others
