Lawndale is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. It is located on the eastern edge of the city of Riverside. The population was 1,822 at the 2000 census. Lawndale has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than two centuries and first appeared on maps in 1827 as part of Rancho Niguel. In 1851, it was incorporated as a town under the name of Fillmore. It changed its name to Lawndale in honor of Edwin M. Lawndale, an American politician who served as United States Secretary of War from 1889 to 1897. In 1908, a new water main line was built through the community and renamed West Side Avenue after then-Governor James Buchanan Fairbanks Sr., who had played a significant role in building that line. A post office called Lawndale was established in 1851, and remained operation until it closed on March 15, 1964. The last mailbag arrived at the post office on April 6th; all other mail had already been delivered to other towns within San Bernardino County before that date because there were no wires available to transfer mail between those towns and Lawndale proper. The largest employer in Lawndale during the early years were ranch hands who worked for ranchers located around East Pico Boulevard and North Pomona Boulevard; however, this activity gradually declined over time due to competition from larger municipalities such as Riverside and Ontario City which beganessorily acquiring land near these intersections.
