After years of decline as an agricultural center due to increasing suburban development around it (most notably in 1950 with enactment of state law mandating that agricultural land be developed only for residential purposes), Lawndale experienced resurgence beginning in the early 1990s as an attractant for cluster development projects near major freeways such as Interstate 10 or Highway 101 (the "Foothills Freeway"). This trend accelerated following passage of Proposition 8 (a measure that overturned California's Same-Sex Marriage Act) during Los Angeles' mayoral election campaign in 1992 which spurred increased investment into rural areas throughout Kern County by out-of-state developers looking for exceptions to Prop 8 bans enacted statewide that applied only within metropolitan areas; these investments have resulted in significant job growth over the past few decades for both men and women primarily through production agriculture rather than retail trade.)
