Lawndale, California is a small town in the eastern San Joaquin Valley of California. It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin River and was founded in 1868 by prospectors who discovered gold near its present site. The population was 2,083 at the 2010 census. The town's name comes from two local Indian words meaning "settlement" and "valley". The first settler named Lawndale was John Lawton, who arrived in 1869. A second settler named Lawndale Post also arrived in 1870. At that time, there were only 10 people living in Lawndale. By 1872, however, it had grown to 100 people and by 1880 it had reached 200 people. In 1892, when the railroad came through Lawndale and began transporting goods to Stockton, many of the original settlers moved away and their houses became homes for workers on the new railway line. Today, most of what is left of Lawndale is a small community consisting primarily ofresidential buildings dating back to World War II and an old military base known as Fort Stockton which now hosts a variety of events including concerts and carnivals year-round
Lawndale is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 5,816 at the 2010 census.
