Lawndale is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 946 at the 2010 census. The name may be derived from " land of law" or "lawful". The town was founded in 1876 by Alexander Law and his brothers John and George Law. They were two of the original owners of what is now known as the Rancho San Luis Obispo Adobe complex on the east side of the San Joaquin River. It was here that Alexander Law developed a legal system based on tort law that would be adopted by other communities in Kern County. The first store in Lawndale opened its door on December 3, 1876, when Hyrum W. Coffin bought supplies from A.B. Morse & Co., located across the street from their first store which had been built by Captain James Folsom four years earlier. In 1877, John Loomis became manager of the store and continued to run it until his death in 1922; during his tenure, Loomis also added a grocery and post office to the business enterprise. In 1888, Judge Augustus Gardner purchased some land adjoining Lawndale for use as a public school district; this made Lawndale one of two towns in Kern County (the other being Bakersfield) with school districts established before statehood(). The first class ever taught at LAWNDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT #1 was held on September 11th 1889- an event commemorated annually by giving away free lunches to all students who attended! Classes were initially taught in Mr./Mrs.(first name only)-style rooms but later moved into more modern building facilities when available; today’sLawndale High School facility dates back to 1965! In 1905 Justice William Tilden organized LAWNDALE ASSOCIATION OF COUNTY CLERKS & TREASURERS which still meets monthly for social purposes (& dine out). Membership has grown over time to over 100+ individuals! Today’s Association offers many services such as: lobbying legislation/voting judicial nominations etc... This organization has helped numerous candidates get elected including many members currently serving on various local committees & boards! On May 14th 1906 an act authorizing creation of an Agricultural Experiment Station at Madera featuring research into new farming methods was filed with Secretary of State Hiram Johnson; upon receipt Governor Goodwin Proctor appointedGeorge Dean Attorney General to head up this important initiative!(Dean would go onto become oneof Kern county’s most distinguished attorneys – serving twice as Governor & once as U S Senator) On July 26th 1907 THE LAWNDALE MUNICIPAL ELECTION WAS ADMINISTERED BY OFFICIAL ACT AFTER MUCH VOTING hassle free process; all citizens voting were registered ahead of time through Supervisor James Gorman…a huge accomplishment given that there were ONLY 154 residents living within LAWNDALE Borough limits at that time!!!!! As stated previously MADERA COUNTY spanES ALL OVER THE AREA FROM WHERE THE RAILROAD CAME INTO SERVICE IN 1865 TO WHERE IT LEFT AGAIN IN 1920!!! By following these simple rules voters ensured fair elections EVERY TIME!!
