Lathrop is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Stockton–San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lathrop was founded in 1887 by George Lathrop and his brother Amos Lathrop as a small farming community on the southern edge of what is now Kern County. The name came from an Indian word meaning "to cut down live trees." George and Amos had both been born in eastern Massachusetts and their father had come to California in 1851 to help start a new ranch there. In 1887, George moved his family to what is now Lathrop and began farming along theranch River which flows through the town. In 1928, when Lathrop became one of nine townships within the Los Angeles metropolitan area, it annexed parts of Stockton which were then part of San Joaquin Valley. As with most annexation decisions made by LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa at that time, there was significant public opposition because many people felt that this would lead to increased traffic congestion and economic decline in their smaller hometown. In 1930, after much voter pressure, LA annexed all but two of the township's twelve villages (northwestern corner excluded), creating an even more decentralized municipality with a total population of just over 9800 residents as compared to Lathrop's current 2,821 residents. The economy has been strongly impacted by its proximity to Los Angeles; during any given year between 2000 and 2009 only 1% or so of all business activity occurred outside of Lathrop while almost half (45%) All local jobs were associated with services provided by businesses within 1 mile (1 km) of either town center or village center. However since 2006 a large number (53%)of new businesses have opened up in neighboring Union City/Eureka Heights/Fremont/Saratoga Springs across several miles eastward into San Joaquin Valley where job opportunities are abundant for people who are not related to those cities or counties—a trend that will continue as more landowners sell land adjacent to their townships for development purposes including suburban homes and offices developmentsatter than ever before!

In recent years *Lathrops government has focused on developing new annexations within the town limits which provide additional services such as health care., high school education., firewood storage *and rural postal service.*
