The name "Lathrop" comes from Old English hlætorp (“hill-fort”), which means simply "a hill". The community's first school opened in 1859 and was known as Agricultural High School for boys until 1865 when it became district high school. In 1902, the original courthouse burned down, but new construction soon allowed for a full-time school with an enrollment of 350 students. After World War II, growth led to additions to the campus including a gymnasium and library (now known as annex A). In 1978, district voters passed Proposition 209 which repealed all affirmative action programs within local government bodies statewide. As a result of this measure, many non-white students were forced out of districts that had used them before; however, due to efforts by local officials and members of the white community who supported Prop 209, most African American students continued to attend district schools despite this change. In 2006–2007 Lathrop experienced its worst economic recession since 1969 when unemployment reached 10%. However over time median household incomes have slowly begun recovering while joblessness has decreased overall; however there are still many residents struggling during these tough times In recent years there has been an effort spearheaded by Mayor Ruben Gomez to get more property tax revenue from businesses within his city limits This has included supporting initiatives such as parking lot management ordinances that would allow businesses greater leeway in how they structure their own security measures having increased fees paid directly to city coffers instead of county coffers

Lathrop was founded in 1887 by George Lathrop and his wife Lillie. The town is located about 60 miles east of Sacramento and about 25 miles west of Stockton. George Lathrop was born in 1844 in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. He migrated to California in 1865 and began working on the family farm near Sutterville. In 1876, he married Lillie Copley, who had come from nearby Glenn Falls. The couple moved to Lathrop in 1887 and started the grocery store there that would remain operational until 1959. They were also instrumental in starting the local high school (now known as California State University at Fresno) and developing other businesses within the town. Lathrop's legacy can be seen throughout his town - his grocery store remains an important hub for commerce today, while his schools continue to offer education opportunities to children locally and statewide. He is also buried at Lake View Cemetery in Lathrop.
