In 1912, Lathrop was named one of the ten largest cities in America by Forbes Magazine During World War II, Lathrop played an important role in the development of radar technology and Battle planning. The city also hosted large military camps during that time period including Camp Pendleton which is now home to the Marine Corps Base Quantico . Lathrop experienced rapid growth after World War II and today has over 50 businesses with a population of over 100 thousand people. Lathrop is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,671 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the southern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and it is part of the Greater Sacramento metropolitan area. The site of Lathrop was first inhabited by Native Americans, who named it after Captain George Lathrop, an American Revolutionary War general and founder of Stockton. In 1847, John Wesley Powell discovered gold in what would later be known as Kern County and decided to establish a mining town there; Lathrop became one of his many settlements. The town developed rapidly due to its location and access to water resources: in 1850 Lathrop had two newspapers and six businesses; by 1860 Lathrop had over 100 residents. By 1870, lumber had become the city's most important industry and Lathrop became known for its fine white oak furniture. In 1876–77 local physicians Drs. Samuel Mathers (1836-1901) and George Bogan (1839-1910), along with their colleague Drs. James Humes (1835-1920) traveled to Europe to learn about new medical techniques that they could bring back to America; they returned with a new method for treating tuberculosis that helped make Lathropy one of the first cities in the country to benefit from this treatment campaign. From 1906 until 1915, Mayor Augustus Fenton Wharton served as mayor pro tempore during what is considered California's first municipal election without ballots because then Governor Hiram Johnson refused approval for a change in voting procedures that would have made him inaugurated instead as governor instead of Wharton; this event is also considered to be when City Hall moved from downtown into its current building on Main Street. In 1917–1921 City Councilman Arthur Wiegand served as mayor pro tem during World War I while he was serving in France; he reelected on November 3, 1917 but resigned due to military service two days later after being called up for duty in midstream near Yuma River Bridge on October 25th.; Wiegand was replaced by Harry Ahern (1900-1969). On January 15th., 1933 Mayor Edward Jaffe announced plans for several major projects including creating a fire brigade which never materialized due to lack of funding; however project coordinator Milton Forest suggested using $1 million raised through special events such as dances at civic Center which were popular among locals at that time because they allowed people "to get out and see things". On February 5th., 1933 Mayor Jaffe announced that money had been obtained from state legislators via various means including contributions from citizens groups who wanted Proposition 8 overturned so State Assemblymen Monterey Beall (D-Monterey) and Fortunato Lopez (D-Los Angeles) were able to pass legislation providing funds for firefighting purposes within county limits – this event marked the beginning of what would be called "the golden age" for Los Angeles County’s firefighting capability due largely to public donations like these combined with private investment led by Forrest Gump vice president & general manager of Western Electric Company

It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley and is part of the Fresno–Mendoza Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1868 by J.D. Lathrop as a result of an agreement between he and George Hearn of nearby Rohnert Park over land grants that had been held by both men's families for generations. The name "Lathrop" comes from John Dolanthorpe's homestead near Lathrop Creek which borders what is now Lathrop. Lathrop flourishes because it has access to irrigation water from three canals that flow through it: North Indian Canal, East Indian Canal, and Central Valley Canal. These waterways have allowed farmers to grow crops such as cotton and other vegetables while also providing local jobs for many people who live in the area today. In addition to its agricultural capabilities, Lathrop has also become known for its furniture production; one of the most well-known products produced here is wire mesh used in packaging materials and other items such as construction materials
