In the early 1900s, Lathrop was a small town in California. It was a working-class community that relied on agriculture and ranching to support its residents. The town had one main street and several smaller streets. There were no sidewalks or blocks of concrete. Residents used horse or donkey carts to get around. In 1911, the Lathrop Volunteer Fire Department was founded. The department helped put out fires in the town as well as providing fire safety services to other towns in the area. In 1922, the Lathrop School District was created and the town had its first schoolhouse built. The post-World War II period saw a boom in soft gun manufacturing in California, especially in Lathrop because of its location and access to raw materials. In 1951, Soft Gun Manufacturing Company opened up shop in Lathrop and began making firearms for both civilian and military use.Soft Gun Manufacturing Company continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1984 due to economic reasons (it produces pistols only). Lathrop is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,604 at the 2010 census. Lathrop is located on the east side of the Kern River and is adjacent to Bakersfield. It is named for General George Armstrong Custer and his family who settled there in 1876. Lathrop is one of the few towns in Kern County that are served by a school district. The district, known as the Lathrop-Bakersfield School District, has two schools: Lathrop Elementary School and Lathrop Jr./Sr High School. The first settlers in what would become Lathrop were Levi Parsons and John Addison Porter. In 1876, General George Armstrong Custer's father settled here with his family after traveling from Nebraska. There were four members of the Custers living at this time: George Armstrong Custer (age 10), mother ( age 8), father (age 54), and stepmother ( age 28). In 1907, when Winton Hennepin County was created out of parts of Kern and Fresno counties, Lathrop became part of it; however it remained unincorporated until 1959 when it incorporated as a full town under the name "LATHROP". In 1969, its boundaries were expanded to include portions of Bakersfield along with much of eastern Kern County including Springwater Ranch which had been part of Guerneville Township since 1896 but had never become an incorporated municipality. Today's Townline Mall lay within Guerneville Township until 1997 when it was annexed into LATHROP proper; today's shopping center lies within its current boundaries as well as many other businesses included within its current community square mile making it one of most comprehensive communities in Kern County overall.
