In 1986, Lathrop became one of the first communities in America to pass a law that requires all firearms owners to obtain gun safety training and certify that they are not prohibited by state or federal law from owning any type of firearm. The Gun-Free Zone has since become an epicenter for firearm safety awareness, education and activism. In 1984, then Mayor Chuck Robb made it his goal to create a Gun-Free Zone in Lathrop. He knew that if we could make it safe for everyone, no one would be forced to face violence on their own streets. This was an important message at a time when many people were still scared about using firearms safely and responsibly. In 1985, Mayor Robb teamed up with other community leaders to bring together representatives from businesses and organizations who wanted their memberships included in the Gun-Free Zone ordinance. They consulted with local manufacturers who had production locations outside of California and submitted proposals for how they could help support this important initiative. The Gun Free Zone ordinance passed unanimously by the City Council on November 6th, 1985! The new law required all firearms owners to obtain gun safety training before bringing any weapon into the Community – regardless of whether they were federally licensed or not! And it wasn’t just residents living within walking distance of thezone who needed to be aware; anyone with an unloaded handgun stored at home was also required to attend “firearm safety class” before being allowed possession of a weapon again (or until further notice). Since its passage, Lathrop has seen an increase inPenalties against individuals convicted under this ordinance – including jail time and/or fines up to $10K! This crackdown comes after years of experience learning about how these tools can be used by criminals bent on victimizing innocent people. But even as criminals are prosecuted and punished for violating this city ordinance, our message continues to be loud and clear: don’t let them win!

This innovation made firearm shootings much safer for both individuals and crowds! By 1969,bullets were no longer falling out of rifles like they used to be, so manufacturers started developing new types of projectiles which were less likely to enter through unprotected areas such as your mouth or nose when firing a weapon!
