Lathrop was founded in 1853 by George A. Lathrop and his wife Sarah Hensley. In 1912, Lathrop donated land for the current campus of Valley View College. George A. Lathrop was born in 1796 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to James and Sarah (Baker) Latham Lathrop. He emigrated with his family to what is now Kern County in 1818 and started a farm near today's downtown Lathrop. After becoming a justice of the peace in 1827, he served as an Assemblyman from 1829 to 1830 and then as a State Senator from 1830 to 1833 before moving to Bakersfield where he became involved with various businesses including coaling mines and water rights issues. In 1849, after unsuccessfully running for governor of California against John Cranch (the future Ulysses S Grant), George A. reached out to American banker William Folsom for financial support for his new state venture, which would be named Los Angeles County after him but eventually become Kern County instead because Folsom refused without compensation any other land grants from the Mexican government that had been offered during the Mexican–American War (1846-48).
