A short time later, however, construction began on an even larger courthouse which eventually served as both the county courthouse and jail until it burned down in 1951. In 1916-17,a large irrigation project consisting of over fifty miles of pipeline was completed near Lathropy making it one of the largest such projects ever completed upstate New York .The project involved building five dams across several creek valleys including North Thompson Creek which forms much of today's eastern border with Nevada
