Lathrop, California is a small town located in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Modesto-San Joaquin Valley metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1876 by J.M. Lathrop and his wife Aervi Bowers as a citrus grove on Rancho Lathrop, 8 miles east of Modesto. In 1902, electrical pioneer George Westinghouse built an electric line from Lathrop to Red Bluff and then to Auburn; this opened up much of Northern California to agriculture and industry and made Lathrop one of the most important towns in these areas. In 1929, General Electric purchased the assets of local jeweler Harry Fenton for $2 million dollars and renamed it GE Lighting Company; GE Lighting had been founded by brothers John W. Scudder (1909-1984) and Clarence Haddon (1898-1976). In 1951, GE Lighting merged with American Business Machines Corporation to become IBM; this company still operates out of Lathrop today as part of its Hewlett Packard enterprise group. The first commercial television sets were produced in Los Angeles County by RCA in 1922 when they invented the cathode ray tube or CRT; this technology was later developed into flatpanel LCD TVs which are now common across North America and most other countries. In 1935, Viacom Broadcasting System bought Time Life Paper Products Ltd., maker of newspapers such as Time magazine and Sports Illustrated for $5 million dollars which made Latham one of Paramount Pictures' primary production centers for films such as Star Wars (1977), Ender's Game (1985), Back To The Future II (1990), Jurassic Park III (1993), Poltergeist II (1986) and more recently Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011). In 1984 Viacom merged with Atlantic Media Company which gave rise to la Cosa Nostra entertainment dynasty that includes many top celebrities like Julia Roberts, Robert De Niro, Sheen etc.; both Atlantic Media Group companies remain active until present day including Entertainment Weekly(magazine)and Fusion TV(television network). Agriculture was the original purpose of this location - until 1879 when John Lathrop and his wife Emma founded what would become known as Lathrop on account of their then-father-in-law General Homer Woodruff who had settled there many years before. The name "Lathrop" comes from two factors: firstarily because it is still used today by some residents of the area including farmers (eager to keep their land), secondly because there once were greenhouses here that produced plants like lavender which were exported to England according to one source However, despite these efforts over time little progress has been made towards commercial production other than traditional agriculture given current technology constraints; currently only about five acres are being farmed each year with no plans to expand any further due to these limitations alone! Noteworthy aspects of this history include both local activism (due largely to John's son John W.) during World War II against fascism while also hosting numerous events such as rodeos (1912) and state fairs (1924).

The Lathrop area was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The early pioneers of the region were members of the Mission Santa Clara de Asís, which was founded in 1776. In 1849, Colonel George H. Bancroft surveyed and named what is now Lathrop after his friend and business associate, General James Fenton Lathrop. The town was officially started on July 1, 1850 when a group of farmers from nearby San Fernando Valley came to build a small community near what is now Northridge Boulevard and Arrowsmith Road. A post office operated from 1851 to 1865; its name changes several times during its history including Lathrop (1853-1860), Northridge (1865-1867), and finally Arrowsmith (1907).
