Lathrop is a city located in Sacramento County, California, United States. Lathrop was founded on October 6, 1887 by Captain George A. Crouse and his wife Margaret as the "City of Lathrop" and became an incorporated town on January 1, 1889. The first school in Lathrop was built near present-day Eastern Ave and Fitzhugh Rd. In 1903 the city moved to its present site at 5th Street and Western Ave., east of Interstate 880. The city's only major industry until the early 21st century was agriculture; since then it has become a bedroom community for Sacramento County. Today, much of Lathrop's economy depends upon federal government jobs in Washington D.C., as well as international trade with China and other nations. The population peaked at 2700 in 1960 but has since declined to 1800 people today (2010 Census). Lathrop is now home to many different types of businesses which have sprung up around the area such as restaurants, retail stores, health clubs and even an amusement park! In 2000, Lathrop had an estimated population of 5,373; however it has since shrunk again due to immigration and other factors. Today, Lathrop is primarily known for its agricultural products such as fruits and vegetables (the city produces more than half all Californian produce), livestock (especially cows), cheese production (which accounts for about one-third of all domestic cheese sales), and golf courses.
