At the time, it consisted only of a few adobe buildings and a couple of families. In 1847, John Bolton built a log cabin here which served as his home until his death in 1865. His widow, Hannah Bolton, continued to live here until her death in 1889. One hundred years later, on July 4th 1892 (the date that California became an state), Mrs. Bolton's son-in-law, George Atherton bought 1/4 mile square of property adjoining her mother-in-law's for $8 per acre (1¢ = 4 rods). He named it Atherton Ranch after his father-in-law General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the Mexican War and received many medals for bravery there. In 1907 Atherton sold all but one acre to Captain Harry Dorman for $6000 (USD). Majestic Equestrian Center currently occupies most of this block bounded by Main Street on the north side; West First Street across from Seventh Avenue onerous lot to its southeast; South First Street across from East Second Avenue south; andAHaven Drive between them with large portions still undeveloped today totaling over 20 acres covering much of what is now Lathrop Township Parkland! It should be noted that these early settlers did not have access to water or electricity so they relied upon animal husbandry instead for their subsistence needs such as raising chickens, cows or pigs etcetera .Moses Greenough opened a grocery store here circa 1880’s which would eventually become known as “Greenough” Grocery Store LLC which still exists today! Mr James Sowers began building brick kilns around 1886 just northwest corner 2nd Ave & Main St., serving local farmers for many years before moving upriver to build his larger kiln some time thereafter – this Kiln remains extant today next door tocurrent day 7th Ave & Haven Dr.– also responsible for creating some very early paving stones within our township parkland! Italian Immigrant Antonio Ippolito arrived in America around 1830 via shipwreck off coast Mexico City and settled down along US 41 near present day San Luis Obispo County line; he started harvesting grapes hereabouts beginning circa 1840 prior to coming ashore!. After several years he decidedto move upriver due to harsh weather conditions back then!. Eventually he founded “Ippolito Vineyards”…which still operates today under different ownership!! Spanish immigrant José Gomez arrived approximately 1840 aboard ship La Concepcion anchored offshore off Point Conception Bayou opposite Angel Island where he set up initial vineyards including those associated withtoday’s popular Chardonnay grape variety!!! This area now includes part of what is now known as North County Santa Barbara County…….. Jose Gomez died circa 1850 however his vineyards continued operations until 1916 when they were shuttered due to Prohibition !! The Lathrops were pioneers in ranching and farming in Kern County. Today, the town has a population of about 350 people, who are mostly farmers and ranchers. The first settlers to the area that would become Lathrop were George Lathrop and his wife Maria. They arrived from Connecticut on horseback in 1879. The couple began Rancho Rincon de la Union which was just east ofcurrent day downtown Lathrop. In 1886, they bought 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of land north of present day downtown Lathrop for $5 per acre ($30 per hectare). This land would later be renamed Rancho La Hacienda de las Pulgas where cattle were raised until 1946. George and Maria had two children: Johnnie Ray (1887-1975), who ran the grocery store at First Street North & East Avenue; and Barbara (1889-1981), who became an artist and teacher. Their son Johnnie died at age 54 during World War II when he was drafted into the military but returned home before being stationed overseas; heinjured himself while working on his farm equipment return trip home as part of Army training back in California After their son's death, Barbara took over running the family business after her husband's death in 1951. She also resumed painting after years of retirement In 1957, Mrs.'s brother-in-law Clyde Ewing donated 5 acres (20 hectares) adjacent to their farm to become what is now known as "Ewing Park." It served as a community park until it was sold off to developers in 1966 In 1967 or 1968, government officials decided that it would be more efficient to move all local governments out of Kern County so that they could be consolidated under one administration center - this led to the founding of Alameda County . At this time most residents relocated away from rural Kern County because its economy had collapsed due to low prices for oil products caused by the OPEC embargo .) After Alameda County was formed there were few changes made to ranching or farming practices here other than adding more housing developments around town such as Rancho Mirage & Rancho Palos Verdes . However some agriculture still continues with cowboys driving herds into nearby mountain ranges for milk production
