Lathrop is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Lathrop is located on the east side of the Kern River and on its border with Bakersfield. The name "Lathrop" comes from an old Spanish word for "a meadow". A post office called Lathrop was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The community took its name from General John Sutter's Rancho Lathrop which was situated just east of the present day town site. Lathrop began to grow rapidly after World War II when a large military installation known as Offutt Air Force Base (later Offutt Army Base) came online nearby. With new housing developments being built near the base, more people settled there and the name "Lathrop" came to be commonly used to describe both the community and Offutt AFB itself. Today, Offutt AFB is home to about 12,000 military personnel and their families as well as 10% of all civilian employees at DoD headquarters in Washington D.C.. However, much of what makes Lathrop so unique still exists today - such as its small-town feel and easy access to cultural attractions like Yosemite National Park or Las Vegas - despite all these recent arrivals. As one of America's most diverse communities racially/ethnically minorities comprise about 36% of total population according to US Census data while Latinos represent 27%. There are also numerous independent businesses that have thrived within this small town since it became popular among retirees during the 1970s- 1980s heyday of off-the-grid living and environmentalism around hereabouts!

Lathrop was founded in 1873 by George Lathrop and his son, Don A. Lathrop. The town acquired its present name in 1917 when it became a part of the newly created County of Santa Cruz. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Peninsula and is bordered by Marin County to the north, Contra Costa County to the east, Napa County to the south and west, and San Luis Obispo County to the north-west. The population of Lathrop reached 9,000 in 1920. The townsite at what is now Lathrop was first settled by Native Americans as part of an effort to settle land that had been claimed by both them and Mission San Francisco de Asís. In 1848, George Lathrop purchased some acreage here from Manuel Nieto for $1 per acre. He named his new settlement "LATHROP" after himself and his father-in-law, Capt. James Hutton (1792-1872). In 1907, while still a small community of about twenty families near Sausalito Harbor, Don A., Sr., decided he needed more space so he bought additional land from Captain Hutton's heirs for $10 per acre ($383 per kilometer square). This doubled his original purchase but did not change its location; it still occupies much of what is today known as Rancho Atwater (north side), Rancho Coyote Creek (south side), East Side Road (west side) and parts of West Side Road (north side) between Sausalito Point Light National Monument on one hand and Half Moon Bay on another hand - all within minutes' drive of each other at any time during their lifetime! Today much of what once comprised Rancho Atwater has been developed into Marina Districts around Half Moon Bay while larger portions remain rural with scattered homes built throughout ranchos stretching back over many years around mile marker 17 on I-805/State Route 1A southbound before turning east onto State Route 128/Highway 101A which becomes Highway 27 just outside Novato before terminating at US 101E exit #5 off Interstate 5 where most people live these days - evidence that this once vast rancho remained largely untouched until relatively recently!

However, by 1872, following an economic downturn that hit California hard, Lathrop’s population had decreased to only 50 people. It would not regain its former prominence until after World War II when new industries began arriving in Lathrop and other parts of Northern California.
